While it’s still in the cinema: Multiple Oscar-nominated critical hit

by Han

With “The Banshees Of Inisherin”, Martin McDonaugh has not only received plenty of critical praise, but also racked up nine (!) Oscar nominations. It has now been announced that the bilious tragicomedy will soon be released on Disney+.

Disney+ subscribers can already consider themselves lucky. Especially when they either can’t find the time to go to the cinema or simply prefer to experience films on their couch at home. Because time and again, cinema films are made available here in a stream just a few months after their release. This doesn’t just mean Marvel adventures like “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” or “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. The star-studded satire “The Menu” has also landed rather swiftly in the Disney+ subscription.

Now the next streaming release of a film that is currently even still being shown in some cinemas is imminent: “The Banshees Of Inisherin”. The new film by “Three Billboards” maker Martin McDonagh has been able to attract attention in recent months with almost consistently positive reviews and has risen to become something of an arthouse favourite. Add to this the fact that “The Banshees Of Inisherin” has been nominated for a whopping nine Oscars – including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Screenplay.

“The Banshees Of Inisherin” will be available on Disney+ starting March 15, 2022, which is two days after this year’s Oscars, which will be held on the night of March 12-13.

THAT’S WHAT “THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN “IS ALL ABOUT

Padric Suilleabhain (Colin Farrell) is a kind-hearted, expensive soul who doesn’t have much on his mind. He lives in 1923 on Inisherin, a small island off the west coast of Ireland in Galway Bay. Every day at 2pm he sets off to pick up his best friend Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) at his house to spend the rest of the day in the local pub drinking beer and exchanging pleasantries. But this time Colm doesn’t open the door.

A short time later, Colm opens up to his former best friend that, without any concrete reason, he just doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore. And he even goes one hard step further: if Padraic approaches him anyway and presses him in any way, he will cut off his own finger every time in future, even if he should no longer be able to play his beloved violin because of it…

IS THE PRAISE JUSTIFIED?

We too have to say that Martin McDonagh has managed one hell of a film with “The Banshees Of Inisherin”. The official FILMSTARTS review gave the film 4 out of 5 stars. The conclusion: “A bitterly evil allegory of the Irish Civil War, carried by a terrific cast – and at the same time a stoic, black-humoured comedy that only the Irish can pull off.

We also reviewed “The Banshees Of Inisherin” in the course of its cinema release in January in the FILMSTARTS podcast Leinwandliebe. The author of these lines enlisted the help of social media boss Melanie and Moviepilot editor Jan Felix to not only find out that they are simply unable to pronounce Irish names correctly, but also that “The Banshees Of Inisherin” is a very special film that will stay with you for a long time to come.
