Scream IV has been running in cinemas since last week – and extremely successfully. In the USA, the horror sequel has achieved a record start that puts all previous parts in the shade.

Last year the Scream series returned to the cinema and proved that it has not lost its bite. Shocking deaths and some amusing detours to the meta level have successfully brought the slasher into the new decade. The next chapter in the series is also convincing: Scream VI puts in the best start of the horror series.

This is anything but a matter of course. While the predecessor scored with nostalgia and a long wait, the sequel has to prove that there is indeed a demand for new Scream films. As the Hollywood Reporter reports, Part 6 answers that question with a resounding yes.

Scream VI: Horror return with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega triumphs at box office

In the US, Scream IV managed to take in 44.5 million US dollars over the weekend, something that no other instalment in the series has managed before. The previous best value can be traced back to Scream 3 from 2000, which entered the cinema charts with 34.7 million US dollars at the time. Part 5 brought in 30 million US dollars at the start.

Scream IV is also doing well internationally. The film took in 22.6 million US dollars in the 53 markets in which it was released last week. Worldwide, the sequel stands at 67.1 million US dollars, which can already be considered a convincing success given its budget of 35 million US dollars.

Scream VI was largely well received by critics. The audience is also satisfied, as is clear from the B+ CinemaScore in the USA. But what benefits the film above all is the extreme growth in popularity of its leading actress: since the mega-success of the Netflix series Wednesday, Jenna Ortega has been the talk of the town.
