Arielle the Mermaid Disney remake takes us on a wet fantasy adventure filled with song, danger and whimsical animals as the heroine trades in her fish tail for legs.

The latest Disney remake Arielle the Mermaid is coming to German cinemas on 25 May 2023. After the first short teaser, we had to wait an unusually long time for a proper trailer. But just in time for the Oscars, the fantasy film now offers real glimpses of the world under the sea, lets the new music sound and unleashes the evil sea witch Ursula.

Disney’s Arielle trailer shows Prince Eric, sea people and villain Ursula

Arielle is among the most hotly anticipated fantasy films of 2023. Based on the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, the adventure is another entry in the now long list of Disney live-action remakes that revisit beloved animated classics from the Mouse Brand. In the first long trailer, director Rob Marshall now throws us into the (cold) water:

Mermaid Arielle (Halle Bailey) lives in the depths of the ocean. She longs for the world above the waves, but her father, King Triton (Javier Bardem), has forbidden it. But the sea princess has a mind of her own and rescues Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) during a storm. To follow him to the land, she makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy): In exchange for her beautiful voice, Arielle receives two legs instead of a fish tail. However, she has no idea that the tentacle-wielding villainess has her own plans.

After the last short teaser only gave us a blurry glimpse of Arielle’s sinister opponent with her two moray eels, the first long trailer now shows us Ursula in all her glory. The Disney remake also features an animal reunion with Sebastian the crab, Fabius the fish and Scuttle the seagull. As in the original, Alan Menken is responsible for the music. He is supported by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will also play a knife-wielding chef.
