Today on TV comes the finale of a thoroughly strong sci-fi series that captivates and touches with a unique performance at its centre.
It’s a fight for survival, but the enemies are not just any aliens, but us humans. This is what the Planet of the Apes trilogy, which started in 2011 and made a worldwide audience sympathise with the hairy hero:ins, is all about. The finale, Planet of the Apes: Survival, crowned the series and its charismatic main character Caesar. It’s on TV today.
Planet of the Apes: Survival continues the story of Caesar
After the devastating events in Planet of the Apes – Revolution, war between humans and apes seems inevitable. The fronts have hardened, the fate of the entire planet is at stake. The only question is which species will control the globe in the end. Caesar (Andy Serkis) finds himself in a dilemma, torn between two worlds that are clearly not interested in peaceful coexistence.
Yet Caesar must be a strong leader, especially in this difficult time when reason and sanity threaten to fail completely, to prevent an even greater catastrophe.
All three parts of the science fiction series are highly acclaimed
2011 saw the reboot of the series, Planet of the Apes: Prevolution, hit the cinema and was praised for its complex characterisation of the human-ape relationship. It scored 82 per cent on critics’ aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. That seemed high at the time (especially when compared to Mark Wahlberg’s wicked remake of 2001), but interestingly, the sci-fi franchise has been rated better with each instalment. Planet of the Apes: Revolution (2014) scored 91 per cent, meaning 91 per cent of the reviews submitted were at least positive (RT doesn’t measure how positive they are). The finale Survival then signed off with 94 per cent and was one of the highest rated blockbusters of 2017.
