Old combines a gruesome idea with a strong production
The film’s story takes place mostly on a beach, where the holiday paradise becomes hell for various couples and families. As the characters discover, they age unnaturally fast. In one hour they turn two years older, which suddenly turns small children into adults and leads to a quick death for older characters.
From this cruel idea, Shyamalan has created a stirring film that thrives on the director’s thoughtful settings. Again and again he creates terrifying images that slowly tease or shockingly unleash the horror of the rapid aging process.
Besides, Old is carried by the strong performances of the ensemble of stars like Vicky Krieps, Gael García Bernal, Alex Wolff and Thomasin McKenzie. They convey the panic of their inexplicable situation with emotional performances.
