You can currently stream Tenebre with your Netflix subscription. The horror thriller by Dario Argento mixes bloody murder sequences with an artful production that will amaze you.
No other director has so stylishly combined simple horror stories with great art as Dario Argento. Alongside greats like Mario Bava, he popularised the so-called subgenre of the giallo film. With Suspiria, Argento also created one of the best horror films of all time.
In Germany, the director’s brutal films were difficult to obtain for years because they were often indexed in the uncut version. All the more pleasing that Netflix recently added Tenebrae to its streaming offer. Horror fans shouldn’t miss out on this violent Argento thriller.
Tenebrae thrills with Argento’s stylistically brilliant handwriting
Tenebrae, which is available here on Netflix under the title Tenebre – The Touch of Death, has a similarly simple plot as most of the Italian’s films. This time it’s about an American writer who travels to Rome and becomes involved in a series of murders related to his books.
Of course, as is typical for Argento, there is once again an unknown killer with black gloves and a razor blade as well as female victims in beguiling set-pieces. Add to this the once again outstanding score by the band Goblin, who have provided the distinctive music for many Argento films.
As always, the director puts form above all else, resulting in breathtaking scenes. Argento has also come up with a special concept whereby most of the sets in Tenebre come in bright white as well as brightly lit, often dominated by bright sunlight instead of typical darkness.
This film is also dominated by Argento’s typical (night)dream logic, resulting in incomparable scenes. Above all, a particularly stubbornly aggressive dog, bright red stiletto heels and the tracking shot in and around a house lasting several minutes are ingenious details in this director’s smash hit, which once again rises to bloody-mark-shaking top form in the finale.
In Germany, the uncut version of Tenebre was banned from 1987. In June 2022, according to Schnittberichte, this version was removed from the index, which is why you can fortunately stream the uncut version of the horror highlight on Netflix.
