For a long time we have been speculating what Baby Yoda’s first words are. The new episode of The Mandalorian finally provides us with an answer – and it’s quite unexpected.

The Mandalorian comes up with a spectacular chapter this week. Spectacular is not only the action that happens in the 7th episode of season 3. No, little Grogu aka Baby Yoda also undergoes an exciting development and lets us share the world of his thoughts, which has remained hidden from us until now.
In the new episode of The Mandalorian, Grogu says his first words, but they don’t come directly from his mouth. Instead, the Anzellans on Nevarro have managed to modify IG-11’s old body so that a small creature can sit in the chest and control the former killer droid.

Thanks to the IG unit’s technical upgrade, Grogu can finally express his thoughts – in the form of two words that come out of the gun in a harsh robotic voice: “Yes” and “No”. Before Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) knows it, his protégé is suddenly talking back to him in a lot of words.

Wait, didn’t baby Yoda say his first word a long time ago? Opinions are divided on that one. Grogu often mumbles incomprehensible things to himself. Anyone who pays full attention to the little rascal is likely to have heard a “Patu” several times. However, the series has never clarified whether this is really a word.
Neither Din nor any other person reacted to the recurring “Patu”, suggesting that it falls more into the category of “Cute sounds Grogu makes”. Had it been his first word, Din, as a proud Mando dad, would probably have paid more attention to it.

Now strutting around with the newly christened IG-12, Baby Yoda lets the world in on all the things he (doesn’t) approve of. The 7th episode of season 3 of The Mandalorian uses words for humour and tweaks Grogu’s character. Not only is he cute, but the little Mandalorian comes across as quite cheeky.
In the end, however, the question arises: Were those really his first words? After all, they don’t come directly from his mouth, but are spoken by the mechanical IG voice. It seems more like The Mandalorian is slowly feeling his way towards Grogu, until one day he formulates his first real word himself.
