On Amazon Prime you can watch one of the best horror comedies in recent years in the flat rate. Freaky mixes the elements of a body swap movie with gory horror ingredients.
The body swap comedy is a classic subgenre in the film world. The most famous examples are probably the two Freaky Friday versions starring Lindsay Lohan and Jodie Foster, respectively, as two daughters who switch roles with their mothers. Freaky – Body Swap with Bloodlust from 2020 transposes the idea into a horror film. With under 600 reviews on Moviepilot, it’s still an insider’s tip. You can fortunately stream the film with the flat rate at Amazon Prime *
What is Freaky about?
Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) leads a relatively unspectacular life as a 17-year-old at Blissfield Valley High School. She’s a popular victim for the popular kids, but otherwise she tries to stay in the background with her friends.
While Millie muses that she wouldn’t last long in a horror movie, her life promptly turns into one: Notorious serial killer Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) chooses her as his next target. But instead of killing her, the psychopath and the teen merely switch bodies with each other.
Vince Vaughan and Kathryn Newton are brilliant: why Freaky is worthwhile
The most important thing about a body-swapping comedy is the actors and actresses, who must fully commit to their role reversal and not shy away from silly slapstick. Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn are clearly having fun with the freaky experiment. (The new Marvel star Kathryn Newton in the interview)
Newton, who switches to the role of the serial killer, suddenly walks around with an extremely convincing, diabolical look. Vince Vaughan, on the other hand, throws himself passionately into the insecurities and woes of a 17-year-old schoolgirl. The film itself is somewhat formulaic, with the typical obstacles of a body-swapping comedy being worked through one by one. But that doesn’t make it any less entertaining.
