Emma Watson rose to fame as Hermione in the Harry Potter series, but she hasn’t been in front of the camera for a movie in five years. Why?
Since filming Little Women in 2018, Emma Watson has not been involved in a feature film. At the same time, the doors in Hollywood were open for the actress of Hermione Granger from 8 Harry Potter films. In a new interview, the actress revealed why she made herself scarce in cinema after Beauty and the Beast and Little Women.
Emma Watson felt “like she was in a cage “
Watson has not been idle in the meantime, she is involved with various fashion brands and she advocates for the rights of abuse victims and trans people. Her latest project is a CO₂-neutral gin, which she distributes together with her brother Alex. That’s why she answered a question in an interview with the Financial Times. In it Watson came to speak on her acting break and justified the retreat from the film business thus:
“If I’m honest, I wasn’t particularly happy. I think I felt a bit like I was in a cage. ”
By her own admission, Watson found it particularly difficult to stand up in interviews for films over which she had little creative influence. Therefore, she made a decision:
“I realized that I only wanted to represent things where, if they were criticized, […] I could say, ‘Yeah, I screwed up, it was my decision. I should have done better.'”
Otherwise, she would “hate herself” for defending or excusing things for which she was not responsible.
