Souls is on sixx on Monday evening. The sci-fi film based on a novel by the Twilight author did so poorly that a franchise plan fell through.
In addition to the famous Twilight books, which have spawned a film series that is at least as famous, author Stephenie Meyer has also written a sci-fi novel. The 2008 book, titled The Host, also hit theaters as a film adaptation in 2013.
However, the sci-fi flick Souls, which airs Monday at 8:15 p.m. on sixx, failed to score at the box office. Two planned sequels were therefore never realized.
Sci-fi franchise by Twilight author failed after part 1
The plot of the movie is set in the future, where humanity has been almost completely wiped out by an alien invasion. The so-called souls nest in the bodies of the victims and erase their consciousness. When resistance fighter Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) is infested by an alien and retains her consciousness, she befriends the alien invader. As a result, she eventually becomes the target of the Seeker (Diane Kruger), who wants to convert the remaining humans.
At the box office, Souls did not become another Twilight success. With a budget of $40 million, the sci-fi film only grossed around $63 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo and is thus considered a heavy flop.
Even though the novel that accompanied the film landed on the New York Times bestseller list for a long time after its release, no new series was created from the Twilight author’s sci-fi universe. According to Stephenie Meyer, she planned two sequels to The Host with the titles The Seeker and The Soul.
