Fantasy fans who like to see their fairy tale world turned upside down have just a little time left to catch up on a very entertaining action movie that will soon be disappearing from Disney+.
Disney+ is cleaning out its streaming lineup, and in the process, some movie and series titles are disappearing and won’t be on any Flat for an indefinite period of time. Among the fantasy titles saying goodbye on May 26, 2023, is not only the new series Willow, but also the highly entertaining action film The Princess.
The bloody action tale The Princess is leaving Disney+ soon
A kidnapped princess (Joey King) awakens in a high tower – so far, so fairytale-like. But if you’re waiting for the rescuing prince, you’re wrong, because already in the first 5 minutes the tide turns to predictable fairy tale clichés. Despite familiar set pieces such as towers, weddings, seemingly helpless beauties and a pinch of magic, this king’s daughter very quickly takes her fate into her own hands: by beating up two guards bloody and then blowing out her life lights.
There are fantasy movies we watch to follow a group of allies on a challenging mission, and there are those that are just plain fun. The Princess falls into the latter category on Disney+ – merciless entertainment. As it turns out, the Princess was supposed to be married off to the shady Julius (Dominic Cooper) for the good of the kingdom. But when she refused, he showed his true colors and locked her in a tower to seize the throne for himself. However, he didn’t expect that his defensible bride-in-spe would now begin to fight her way out.
Vertical fantasy duel at Disney+: The Princess is fun mainly because of its fights
When the nameless princess embarks on her personal campaign in Le-Van Kiet’s fantasy actioner, it makes for an amazing mix of The Raid and John Wick – only here it’s a sword-wielding princess who leaves a trail of blood on the stones of fairy tale walls.
It’s the creatively staged battles that make the vertical descent through the tower never boring, while flashbacks gradually reveal what happened before. Confronted with ever-changing weapons and enemies, the heroine must constantly come up with more methods of attack, while we as the audience can turn off our heads and sit back. There are truly worse ways to pass an hour and a half of your time as an action and fantasy fan.
