Avengers mastermind sets Amazon’s $300 million James

With the action-packed agent series, Amazon Prime is creating its own James Bond right now. Now it’s clear that the story will definitely continue with Season 2.

On April 28, 2023, Amazon Prime launched the extremely lavish agent series Citadel. The production of the 1st season is said to have devoured an incredible budget of 300 million US dollars. Anyone who invests such sums is hoping for a big hit. Based on recent reports, Citadel has become just that.

As Variety reports, Citadel is the streamer’s second most successful original internationally. Only The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power managed to attract more viewers. In a global comparison, Citadel ranks as the 4th most-watched Amazon original. This ensures its renewal for season 2.

Citadel season 2 is coming to Amazon Prime and Marvel creator Joe Russo is taking over as director

Citadel season 2 is definitely coming – and it’s being directed by one of the creative minds behind the last two Avengers movies. According to Variety, Joe Russo is taking over directing the new episodes – and he’s doing it single-handedly. That’s notable for one reason: until now, he’s always co-directed his big projects with his brother Anthony, including Avengers 3: Infinity War and Avengers 4: Endgame.

You can watch the trailer for Citadel here:

The Russos have been involved in several major projects in recent years. They have left their footprint in both cinema and streaming. Away from their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they caused a stir with $200 million Netflix blockbuster The Gray Man, for example. They are also behind the highly sought-after production company AGBO (Tyler Rake: Extraction).

Joe Russo directing season 2 of Citadel on his own is an interesting move that raises a question: is one of Hollywood’s most successful duos breaking up right now? We’ve seen it happen many times in the past, from the Coens to Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. But the Russos have at least one more joint blockbuster in the pipeline: The Electric State.
