Gripping courtroom thriller and unbelievably disturbing cinematic nightmare with

The Palme d’Or of Cannes 2023 has been awarded. The jury of Ruben Östlund, Brie Larson and Paul Dano awarded the top prize to Anatomy of a Fall starring Sandra Hüller.

It is the highlight of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival: the awarding of the Palme d’Or. It closes the tradition-steeped festival, which was held for the 76th time this year. For the third time in the history of the festival, a female director was awarded the Palme d’Or of Cannes.

The festival’s main prize went to Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet, in which German actress Sandra Hüller plays a writer suspected of murdering her husband. This develops into a gripping courtroom drama that keeps you constantly guessing about the guilt and innocence of the main character.

The Holocaust film The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer was awarded the Grand Jury Prize. Sandra Hüller also plays one of the leading roles in it. In the film by Under the Skin director Glazer, she mimes the wife of the commandant of the Auschwitz death camp, who lives in close proximity to the mass deaths with her family (More on why The Zone of Interest is a masterpiece (and nightmare)).

The evening’s first award winner in the feature film category was Japan’s Kôji Yakusho, who won Best Male Actor for his performance in Wim Wender’s drama Perfect Days. The award for Best Actress went to Merve Dizdar from Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s morality play About Dry Grasses.
