Today sees the start of the latest entry in an insanely successful series universe in the USA with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. But don’t worry, you don’t have to catch up on all the previous series for this one.
They still exist, the really strong series that have been celebrated in the USA for years and continue to fly completely under the radar in Germany: With 1923, the star-studded third series of the Yellowstone universe starts today, 27 May 2023. And why the entry into this series world at Paramount+ * is absolutely worthwhile, we reveal here.
If you skip the 1923 Yellowstone series, you’re missing out on great suspense cinema
After the recent launch of its predecessor series 1883 (the 2nd Yellowstone series), 1923 takes us again, but with a new cast and at a new time, into the hard life of American settlers. Anyone who believes that cow farmers in Montana led a quiet life at the beginning of the 20th century should be convinced otherwise by Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren). This is made clear right from the first episode, when Fast & Furious star Helen Mirren mercilessly takes down a cowboy with a shotgun and the Indiana Jones icon is ambushed.
Like the modern life of the Dutton family 100 years later (in Yellowstone), 1923 is marked by intrigue and nefarious neighbourhood fights. Just so: sheep farmers (Jerome Flynn from Game of Thrones) and landowners (Timothy Dalton from James Bond) are dull fellows by trade only, and soon even the hardy Duttons have serious casualties to mourn.
The most exciting plotline in 1923, however, turns out to be big-game hunter nephew Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), who searches for the meaning of life in Africa after the First World War and meets Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) instead. The love story complete with struggle for survival is perfect adventure cinema in series form and even if you only came for Harrison Ford, you will at least stay for these two until the end.
