On Sunday, RTL airs the genre gem Underwater as a German free-TV premiere. The sci-fi survival battle sends Kristen Stewart into a rousing horror duel.
After her Twilight breakthrough, Kristen Stewart developed into one of the best actresses of her generation with later films like Personal Shopper or Spencer. In between, she also got a taste for simpler genre outings, in which she also shines.
The best proof of this is Underwater, which RTL will broadcast as a German free-TV premiere on Sunday at 00:00. In the cinema, the sci-fi horror unfortunately went down in 2020, but you should definitely give the rousing underwater battle for survival a chance.
Sci-fi secret tip sparks 95 minutes of pure genre entertainment
In the plot of William Eubank’s film, Stewart plays mechanical engineer Norah Price in the year 2050. When the deep-sea drilling and research station Kepler 822 is struck by an earthquake with her aboard, the crew begins a fight for survival that quickly reveals an even greater horror.
In Underwater, hardly more than five minutes pass before all hell breaks loose and the scenario gradually transforms from a realistically tangible disaster film into a horror nightmare. In the process, Stewart proves in this no-frills survival thriller that she can effortlessly hold her own as a hard-hitting genre heroine.
The underwater finale is dedicated entirely to Stewart’s character’s will to survive. With the help of a spectacularly disturbing revelation, the film also builds to an almost ecstatic climax in the home stretch.
Unfortunately, far too few people were interested in this sci-fi gem at the cinema at the time. With a budget of between 50 and 80 million dollars, Underwater only earned 40 million dollars worldwide and thus flopped. In addition to the TV broadcast, you can also stream the film on Disney+ by subscription. *
