After a recent spate of cancellation news from the streaming service, we don’t have to be sad today for once when one of Netflix’s best series ends.
This year we have already seen 16 Netflix series cancelled. So it’s all the nicer when a story that’s been running for several seasons isn’t simply cut off, but brought to a proper end: With the 4th season of Noch nie in meinem Leben … Netflix will say goodbye to an outstanding youth series on the streaming service on 8 June 2023 – without us having to mourn an unfinished narrative.
After 4 seasons: never in my life is Netflix bidding a dignified farewell
Never in my life have I met someone like Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan). But three years ago she stumbled into my Netflix life and I couldn’t imagine life without her as a series highlight. Inspired by the childhood of series creator and actress Mindy Kaling, the story of the American teenager with Indian roots who is caught between two worlds.
In its 4 seasons, the Netflix series Never In My Life oscillates between witty teenage commentary and extraneous shame moments that main character Devi navigates with a heavy dose of self-awareness. The teenager works so well as the centre of the series because she is something new as an egocentric nerd: instead of conforming to the image of the coy nerd, she openly pines for school crush Paxton (Darren Barnet) and at the same time intellectually stands up to her equal nerd Ben (Jaren Lewison).
The fact that Devi nevertheless remains likeable as a character is thanks to her charming friends (Lee Rodriguez and Ramona Young), who repeatedly put her in her place and also let her reflect on past mistakes. Thus, in the 4 seasons of Never in My Life, the schoolgirl is allowed to complete a journey full of missteps towards maturity.
The 4th season Never in My Life is a Netflix gift
That Never in My Life gets to bring this journey to a proper end amidst the Netflix cancellation craze is not a given. So instead of being annoyed at the end of this cheeky, quick-witted and insanely funny series that combats previous girl-imagery with a delightfully lecherous counter-draft, I’m looking forward to a well-rounded finale. One that allows me to say a proper goodbye and brings the threads of the narrative (including a final love interest decision) together.
Because Devi has come a long way in 4 seasons and if the final season now shows us on Netflix the final step from school days to adulthood, I will be able to let the beloved character and her series go with a clear conscience. Because she’s grown up, found her way despite her dead father and leaves me with the belief that everything will be all right. Even if the next pitfalls await her in college, as Mindy Kaling’s next series The Sex Lives of College Girls on Amazon Prime * shows as the perfect follow-up binge.
