The second season of the fantasy series The Witcher leaves us after eight new episodes with a nasty cliffhanger and the urge to bing the next season directly. The good news: Season 3 is definitely coming to Netflix. The bad news: It will be the last episodes with Henry Cavill. The Witcher season 3 will be released in two parts. The first 5 episodes will start on Netflix on 29 June 2023. After a break of several weeks, the remaining 3 episodes will be available starting July 27, 2023.

Prequel: What novel is The Witcher season 3 based on?
While the first season filmed several short stories from the anthologies The Last Wish and The Sword of Providence as an introduction to the world of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher saga, The Witcher season 2 was largely dedicated to the first novel of the main pentalogy series called The Heir of the Elves. Season 3 adapts the plot of the second volume, titled The Time of Scorn.
Plot: What happens in the 3rd season of The Witcher on Netflix?
Warning, spoilers for The Witcher season 2: Season 2 of The Witcher saw Geralt (Henry Cavill), Ciri (Freya Allan) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) finally come together. Meanwhile, across the continent, various factions are positioning themselves to take control of Ciri for a variety of reasons. Here, season 3 is supposed to provide answers as to what exactly the kingdoms of the North or Redania, the Wild Hunt and the Empire of Nilfgaard are up to.
Especially Nilfgaard will be more in focus in season 3, after the true identity of Emperor Emhyr var Emreis (Bart Edwards) was revealed to us for the first time at the very end of season 2. The ruler of Nilfgaard aka the White Flame is none other than Ciri’s biological father. This was previously known to us as Duny of the Alder Forest and was thought to be deceased.

With a (spoiler-free) look at the novel The Time of Contempt, the magical training of Ciri by Yennefer is advanced in season 3. The main setting will once again be the magic school Aretuza on the island of Thanedd. On Thanedd we can also expect a shocking event and at the same time the climax of the first three seasons, in which the course of the rest of the series is set. The most epic and dangerous battle for Geralt so far can also be marvelled at.
