The Walking Dead brings back Negan and Maggie in the new series Dead City. The first reviews promise an exciting sequel with weaknesses.
Last November, The Walking Dead came to an end after 11 seasons. However, the story of the zombie apocalypse is far from over and continues with several spin-off series. The first of these is The Walking Dead: Dead City and brings Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) back in a completely new setting. The first reviews have now been published ahead of the US release. They draw a divided conclusion.
The Walking Dead return of Maggie and Negan makes for mixed reviews
Dead City is already the 4th spin-off of the TWD universe and is set a few years after The Walking Dead finale. Maggie’s son Hershel has been kidnapped to New York City. To save him, she enlists the help of her former nemesis, the murderer of her husband Glenn, of all people.
First, the good news for anyone who dropped out of The Walking Dead at any point and is fundamentally interested in the new Maggie Negan show. According to Collider Dead City offers a good re-entry point: “While there are some details from the main series that it draws on, it works as a compact narrative that will pick up viewers unfamiliar with the previous seasons. “
Collider praises Deady City as “the strongest story The Walking Dead has had in years”. “Darker, harsher and even more gruesome than its predecessors,” says The Wrap describing the tone of the spin-off, which according to The Knockturnal grosses out with “the most disgusting zombies”. Less euphoric, however, is Coming Soon’s sober conclusion : “An absolutely average series. “
The Walking Dead: Dead City has a fantastic setting, but weak supporting characters
Much praise is given to the two stars of the series. The still simmering conflict, moral opposites and constant bickering between Maggie and Negan are said to be the heart of the series. Looper but criticises: “What happened to Glenn will always be a matter between Maggie and Negan, but it would be nice if the two were brought together by something other than that”.
Away from the central duo, however, Dead City weakens when it comes to its supporting characters, committing, according to Gamespot “some of the same mistakes that have been made too often in the main show”. Specifically, the show “spends too much time with characters we’ve only just met and who feel inauthentic and uninteresting. “
