Here’s the true order of the car action movies of the Fast & Furious series with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker for you, including a short film by Vin Diesel himself.
The Fast and the Furious series has become confusing to keep track of since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. We can show you the chronologically correct order of the films here, including a short film by Vin Diesel that some of you might not have seen yet.
Fast and Furious: 13 films and 2 shorts
2001 car adventures began. It all started with The Fast and the Furious, in which Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and undercover cop Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) meet for the first time. This was followed by the first short film Turbo-Charged Prelude, which is a small prequel to 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Now things get complicated. Because the chronologically next film is not part 3 of the franchise. Rather, the correct order is: after 2 Fast 2 Furious comes the second short film Los Bandaleros and then the 4th part, Fast & Furious – New Model. Original Parts.
Lost Bandoleros was directed by Vin Diesel himself. The 20-minute short film complements the story of the fourth feature film by depicting the back story of the tanker truck theft.
Tokyo Drift confuses the series, part 6 provides clarity
Fast & Furious 4 reunited Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in front of the camera for the first time since Part 1. Fast & Furious Five and Fast & Furious 6 followed shortly after and introduced several new characters, including Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson).
How Fast & Furious 6 unites the timelines
In the end credits sequence of Fast & Furious 6, the big twist occurs, catching up to the timeline of Tokyo Drift: In it, the film jumps to the Japanese capital. We see the car chase from Tokyo Drift that will cost Han Lue (Sung Kang) his life. It is revealed who is responsible for the death: it is Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). He wants revenge for his brother Owen (Luke Evans).
This makes Fast & Furious 7 the first film to take place after the events of Tokyo Drift. Now Deckard Shaw is the adversary of Dom’s crew.
In Fast & Furious 8, Dom Toretto is forced by the mysterious hacker Cipher (Charlize Theron) to take action against his team. Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw was then the first spin-off of the series. Here, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s characters team up to take on Idris Elba’s villains.
Fast and Furious 9, in turn, heralded the series finale, with the introduction of Dom’s brother Jacob and the return of Han, who was thought to be dead. This was followed in May 2023 by Fast & Furious 10, also known as Fast X Part 1, which is the prelude to a two-parter that ends with a big cliffhanger.
Before the second part hits cinemas in 2025, Dwayne Johnson will return as Luke Hobbs in a solo film. This film is described as a bridge to the next F&F film, so will play between Fast X 1 and 2 in terms of timing.
