In the last few years, Star Wars and Marvel fans have been literally inundated with films and series. According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, this is now finally to come to an end.
An impressive 32 films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been released in the last 15 years. Star Wars fans, on the other hand, have been supplied primarily with series on Disney+ since the last cinema film in 2019. The high number of releases recently resembled a content flood that has already led to oversaturation for many.
Back in April 2023, we reported that Marvel intends to release fewer films and series from now on. Disney boss Bob Iger has now confirmed this strategy for the two major brands.
Disney CEO focuses on more quality over quantity at Marvel and Star Wars
As Iger told CNBC now, less Marvel and Star Wars content will be produced and released in the future. The Disney CEO himself says that it was mainly the increased amount of MCU content due to the additional Disney+ series that led to a lack of focus and attention.
After the new Star Wars trilogy came under heavy criticism with Episodes 8 and 9, there is also evidence of growing fatigue in the MCU of late. Even though the films of Phase 4 were still far from box office flops, blockbusters like Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings or Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have not been able to bring in as much money as the previous films from the Marvel universe.
Iger’s decision is also linked to Disney’s overall plan to cut $3 billion in content costs this year, of which only sports are excluded. So it sounds like Disney is putting the emergency brakes on more quality over quantity at Marvel and Star Wars, effective immediately.
