In 1996’s Fear, Mark Wahlberg plays a psychopathic stalker who seduces Reese Witherspoon’s character. One particularly intimate moment came against the actress’s will
Before his roles as an action star, Mark Wahlberg starred in smaller films in the 90s that many of his fans may not even know about. One of them is the 1996 psychological thriller Fear, in which the actor plays a psychopathic stalker who seduces Reese Witherspoon as the main character.
In a recent interview, the actress recalled the filming of the movie, where she shot a special sex scene against her will. The moment subsequently shaped Witherspoon’s entire working style.

While speaking to Harper’s Bazaar the star recalled a particularly uncomfortable scene from Fear. In it, a sex scene occurs between her 16-year-old character Nicole and Wahlberg’s David during a rollercoaster ride. The actress shot the moment against her will at the time, as she explains in an interview:
“The script didn’t specifically say that’s what was going to happen. I think the director came up with it himself and then asked me on set if I would do it and I said no. It wasn’t a particularly great experience. It wasn’t a particularly great experience. “

Fear director James Foley allowed the intimate scene to be shot anyway, even though Witherspoon was visibly uncomfortable with it. In conversation, the actress describes the incident as formative for the way she later worked with her own production company Hello Sunshine:
“It made me realise where my place was in the pecking order of filmmaking. I think it’s another one of those stories that made me want to be an agent for change and someone who can maybe be a better leader in telling stories from a female perspective rather than the male gaze. “
