one of the most positive film surprises of 2023 unfortunately disappointed at the box office. Nevertheless, there is hope for a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons.
That Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves could become something very special was already foreseeable before the cinema release. The fantasy film with Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez made this promise come true as a fun adventure with original action ideas and a brilliant cast. However, this was not reflected at the box office.
Sandwiched between the releases of John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the D&D film had no opportunity to build a larger audience via word of mouth. The disappointing box office result therefore argues against a sequel. Recently, the head of Paramount personally named the one condition under which we could see Chris Pine and co. again in these roles.
Dungeons & Dragons 2 is not without a chance, but it will be hard
Studio CEO Brian Robbins was on hand to answer Variety s questions. As part of a big portrait, he got to talking about the possibility of Dungeons & Dragons 2. His response:
“We have to figure out how to produce the film for less money. ”
Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves has not made a profit, but will make a loss, according to the trade paper. How big that is remains a matter of speculation. The budget is estimated at 150 million dollars. In order to break even, the fantasy film would probably have had to break the 370 million mark in box-office takings, since advertising and other costs have to be included in addition to the budget. D&D, however, only grossed 208 million dollars.
Sequels with lower budgets than their predecessors are not uncommon. With films like Paddington 2, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Logan – The Wolverine, the math worked out. Whether Dungeons & Dragons will make it that far remains unclear.
