The Changeling fantasy adaptation is not for the faint of heart. You’ll love the horror tale and end up upset about exactly one thing. Spoiler free!

Apple TV+ has established itself as the new savior in the sci-fi realm. After sci-fi successes For All Mankind, Foundation, Silo, and Severance, Apple finally has its turn in the neglected fantasy genre with a critical hit.

The Changeling is the name of the horror adventure that all fantasy fans need to have on their radar.

Today starts the most violent fantasy tale of the year – and 2 things must be clear to you before watching

The Changeling fantasy series is a film adaptation of the acclaimed novel of the same name * by Victor LaValle. The story begins with lovers Apollo (Lakeith Stanfield) and Emmy (Clark Backo). However, their young family happiness seems to be enchanted and after a terrible event Apollo is pulled into a horror fairy tale world. Let’s not reveal more about the plot.

The first warning goes to pregnant women and parents of young children: You should definitely read about the beginning of the story in advance. Let me put it this way: For those who found M. Night Shyamalan’s horror series Servant, also on Apple TV+, too violent, they should keep their hands off The Changeling.

In the trailer, The Changeling goes from romance movie to horror adventure real quick

The Second Warning: season 1 The Changeling ends in the middle of the story. Only the first half of the novel is shown in season 1 of the fantasy adaptation. Thus, the ending is open and the 2nd season is not officially ordered yet. If we are stuck with our questions, at least we can console ourselves with the underlying book that will answer them.

The reviews speak for themselves: The Changeling is a must-see for fantasy fans who can stand horror

If the reviews are to be believed, Season 1 of The Changeling is still worthwhile. The fantasy adventure has earned 71 out of 100 points on Metacritic. For comparison, the currently extremely popular fantasy adventure One Piece stands at 67 on the critics’ platforms. Tastes are always subjective, of course, which is why we also have a few meaningful insights from the critics.

Collider calls The Changeling a “gripping and nerve-wracking adaptation” and a “welcome addition” to the fantasy genre. For Ready Steady Cut and many others, LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out) is the main selling point for the series:

“LaKeith Stanfield is phenomenal in the lead role and the horror elements draw you in. “

Allison Picurro warns TV Line about the open ending and that the series isn’t exactly squeamish with viewers:

“A lot of people will be bothered by the finale that doesn’t answer all the questions […], but I wasn’t bothered by the series not wanting to hold hands with the audience. All who embark on this journey will get a beguiling picture book in series form. “

On September 8, 2023, The Changeling launches with the first three of eight episodes on Apple TV+. A new episode will be released every week until October 13. In total, you will be presented with 400 minutes of the horror tale in Season 1, as each episode averages just under 50 minutes in length.
