Now in theaters: This 167-minute action epic is currently breaking ranks

by Han

The German cinema weekly charts are currently clearly determined by Hollywood – with one exception! Because the action epic “Jawan” succeeded in doing something that has never been done before…

Action fans are currently going to the cinemas for “The Equalizer 3”, in which they can see Denzel Washington’s farewell performance as the charismatic and efficient professional killer Robert McCall. The trilogy conclusion, which was launched at the end of August, still tops the local charts – and still had to take a small defeat at the beginning of the week. History wrote.

With “Jawan” an Indian film sat down on Monday for the first time in the history at the point of the German cinema charts – which it applies however correctly to classify: Because while for the official Charts usually the spectator numbers are consulted, it concerns in this case now the internationally usual evaluation via box office result. And as the Indian entertainment magazine Pink Villa now reports, the figures from the beginning of the week are historic: With a box-office take of just under 97,000 euros last Monday, “Jawan” took the top spot – a razor-thin margin ahead of “The Equalizer 3” with 93,000 euros.

A few movie theaters were not even considered in the evaluation, but the number of theaters is so manageable that this has no effect on the result, said Pink Villa. In the first five days, “Jawan” grossed a total of over 419,000 euros – after setting a record for an Indian film in Germany with 147,000 euros on the opening day alone.

And it would have been even more if the theatrical release of the action blockbuster starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan had not coincided with the nationwide cinema festival. The Monday figures are thus not least due to higher ticket prices – which FILMSTARTS editor Daniel Fabian also heard. He saw “Jawan” for 15 euros, while a ticket for the direct competitor “The Equalizer 3” – depending on the screening – would only have cost between nine and eleven euros.

In addition, “Jawan” not only became the first Indian film to top the Australian box office charts, but also broke record after record in India: The Hindi version grossed more than 8.2 million dollars on the first day, and even 9.5 million dollars including the Telugu and Tamil versions – after “Jawan” had already sold more tickets in advance than any other Indian film.

And “Jawan” is also considered a crowd puller in the USA. There, the film grossed an impressive $6.5 million in its opening weekend, placing it fourth on the charts – behind “The Nun II” ($32.6 million), “The Equalizer 3” ($12 million) and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” ($10 million). However, the success of “Jawan” is all the more impressive when the number of cinemas is taken into account: While the U.S. productions mentioned above were shown in over 3,000 American theaters, “Jawan” was shown in only 813 theaters!

“JAWAN”: ONE OF THE ACTION HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR!

(Not only) By the way, within the FILMSTARTS editorial team “Jawan” triggered sheer enthusiasm, so we can only recommend it to all action fans out there: If you have the chance to experience this spectacle on the big screen, take it! You can expect a nearly three-hour action epic with a lot of guts for Larger-than-life cinema – which is increasingly missing in Hollywood. Since most movie theaters only have a few screenings of the film – similar to SRK’s “Pathaan,” which was released in January – it’s worth checking in advance when and for how long you’ll be able to see the film.

In “Jawan” director Atlee Kumar (“The Spark – Theri”) tells the story of a man who decides to fight injustice in society in Robin Hood style – until one day he is finally caught up by his dark past. And then no stone is left unturned, as the trailer above already makes more than clear.
