Fans of the legendary slasher series might have already guessed it: Even if the title of the latest Michael Myers butchery orgy promises something different, “Halloween Ends” is probably not the end. Further cinema and TV projects are in the offing.
When it was revealed a few years ago that the conclusion of David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” sequel trilogy would be titled “Halloween Ends”, some fans of the slasher series once brought to life by John Carpenter must have smiled. Because even though Green said goodbye to Haddonfield horror with that film, connoisseurs know: “Halloween” – like Michael Myers – simply can’t be killed! And now, after a total of 13 “Halloween” films, this is once again evident. But one thing at a time.
First of all, the Limited Edition of the “Halloween” trilogy in 4K on 12 October 2023 is a very special home cinema premiere that brings together Green’s three-part series for the first time as a limited collector’s box (including three steelbooks) – just in time to get in the mood for the scary festival. However, the fact that this is merely the completed timeline of the sequel to Carpenter’s “Halloween – The Night of Horror”, which started with “Halloween” (2018), also means that there are still ways to continue the saga elsewhere. And that is exactly what is likely to happen in the coming years.
Miramax is already looking specifically for possibilities to continue with “Halloween” in “film and television” – that is: in the cinema as well as possibly in series format. This is reported by Bloody Disgusting on the basis of internal sources. According to the report, the studio that owns the rights to the series is looking for a partner after the Green trilogy found its way into cinemas via Universal Pictures.
Bloody Disgusting reports that there is already a “gigantic bidding war with various parties showing interest in resurrecting Michael Myers.” The site, which is well connected in horror matters, also reports that both classic film studios and streaming providers are involved. Concrete production companies are not named, however. At Miramax, on the other hand, they are weighing up how they would like to continue after “Halloween Ends”, in which direction they could go now.
“HALLOWEEN” & MICHAEL MYERS: HORROR FOR ETERNITY
John Carpenter created a gigantic box-office hit with “Halloween – The Night of Horror”, which is still considered one of the greatest horror classics ever and launched modern slasher cinema (together with “Black Christmas” from 1974). It established genre tropes that are still common today, not least the unstoppable killer – which became something of a running gag within the series over the years.
Even in the first film, the masked killer catches a series of bullets before he even falls off the balcony – and finally disappears into the night. The finale of “Halloween II”, with its huge explosion and bleeding eyes, would probably also end fatally for our one – not to mention Michael’s return in “Halloween: Resurrection”, after his head was actually chopped off. Yes, if there’s one thing the past has taught us, it’s that the means of actually destroying Michael Myers, as well as finally shutting down the “Halloween” franchise, has yet to be invented…
