Gerard Butler is primarily associated with action cinema. But he proved that the Scottish superstar can also do something completely different in the love film “P.S. I Love You”. It’s now available as an Amazon Prime Video subscription.
In recent years, Gerard Butler (“Kandahar”) has almost exclusively starred in action productions and thus ensured that he is primarily associated as a hero equipped with powerful abilities. But even though films like “Plane”, “Olympus Has Fallen” or “Criminal Squad” dominate his work, the Scottish actor has also made excursions into other genres from time to time.
In addition to the gangster comedy “RockNRolla”, the vampire horror “Wes Craven Presents Dracula” or the musical adaptation “The Phantom of the Opera”, Gerard Butler also showed his sensitive side in the cinema hit “P.S. I Love You”. You haven’t yet seen the love story by Richard LaGravenese (“Beautiful Creatures – An Immortal Love”) based on the novel of the same name* by Cecelia Ahern? Then you can catch up on it now with your Amazon Prime Video subscription.
THAT’S WHAT “P.S. I LOVE YOU” IS ABOUT
Even though the New York flat is a bit too cramped and their plans for the future differ, Holly (Hilary Swank) and Gerry (Gerard Butler) are united by the most important thing: their mutual love. Holly’s despair is all the deeper when her husband suddenly dies. But he has taken precautions so that he can still form some kind of bond with Holly after his death. So on her birthday, the sad widow receives a death notice from her husband asking her to go celebrate.
In regular letters from now on, Gerry sets Holly tasks to help her find her way back to life. But each of the letters ending with the postscript “P.S. I love you” also brings the memories to life, so that Holly quickly becomes fixated only on Gerry’s messages. Her mother (Kathy Bates) is concerned about this behaviour – and even the bartender Daniel (Harry Connick Jr.), who is seriously interested in Holly, can’t really get close to her. The highlight of the deceased’s plan is a trip to his native Ireland, where the couple met…
HEARTBREAKING ENTERTAINMENT CINEMA
The official FILMSTARTS review gave “P.S. I Love You” a very solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. In the conclusion of his review, our author Andreas Staben writes:
“‘P.S. I Love You’ is a rare specimen of classic emotional entertainment cinema for an adult audience of both sexes. In the best Hollywood tradition, it tells of great feelings intelligently, sensitively and wittily with charismatic stars, attractive supporting actors and spot-on dialogue. “
The audience saw it the same way and made sure that “P.S. I Love You”, which had a budget of 30 million US dollars, was able to bring in more than 156 million US dollars globally – and thus advanced to become a real cinema hit. So if you have a soft spot for heartrending romances, you can take a look here – and of course don’t forget your tissues. Gerard Butler fans who otherwise only know the actor from action-packed thrillers can experience another facet of the “300” star here – and thus also close a gap in his oeuvre.
