On Saturday, Sat.1 will air a Harry Potter film that had to do without many scenes from the book. A deleted passage would have made the fantasy blockbuster even darker and more tragic.
Film adaptations of books can seldom cover all the plot contained in the originals. An example of this is provided by the Harry Potter series, the fifth part of which has the most extensive novel as its basis. The Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix adaptation, at 138 minutes, is one of the shortest films in the franchise and deleted many scenes from the book.
But it is a particular pity about one cut in the fantasy blockbuster, which will be shown on Sat.1 on Saturday. It would have given the fifth Harry Potter film even more tragic depth.

Fifth Harry Potter film forgoes tragic Neville backstory
In addition to the familiar Hogwarts Hospital Wing, the fifth Harry Potter volume also introduces St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Illness and Injury for the first time. Here the Weasleys visit the injured Mr. Weasley with Harry. In addition to a reunion with Gilderoy Lockhart, there is a detailed explanation of the background story of Neville’s parents.
In the book, the gruesome past of Alice and Frank Longbottom is described. As Aurors during the First Wizarding War, they both knew the whereabouts of Dumbledore and were tortured into madness for it by Bellatrix, Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange.
They were then sent to St Mungo’s Hospital, where they remained for the rest of their lives. The act is considered one of the most gruesome ever in the Harry Potter universe and would have made the fifth film much darker.
