Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips’ “Joker”. Now he will reprise the role in “Joker 2” – with the powerful-voiced Lady Gaga at his side.
The comic book villain drama “Joker” hit cinemas in 2019, and after the success of the gritty character study, for which Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar and which picked up another win (for Hildur Guðnadóttir’s music) and a total of eleven nominations, it quickly became clear that a sequel would follow. The bad news: it will be five years between the two films. The good news: In the meantime, the cinema release of “Joker 2: Folie À Deux” is only one year away!
On October 3, 2024, “Joker 2” will hit the cinemas and just in time one year before, director Todd Phillips now shared a new picture of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck on Instagram to keep fans’ anticipation going:

In the photo, Phoenix as Arthur Fleck is standing in the rain amidst colourful umbrellas – which is a little reminiscent of umbrella dance numbers from musicals, which brings us to the topic: “Joker 2: Folie À Deux” is going to be a musical. This is an extremely exciting choice of genre after the very serious and sombre tone of the first part. How many musical interludes there will ultimately be, however, remains to be seen. They will probably be part of the shared delusions of the Joker and Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) that the sequel is supposed to be about.
“JOKER 2: FOLIE À DEUX”: SHARED MADNESS
Arthur Fleck has in fact ended up in the mental institution Arkham Asylum, where he meets Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn, with whom he develops a complicated (love) relationship in the comic book originals. The film title “Folie À Deux” is likely to refer to the mental illness of the same name, in which two people can develop a delusional disorder together – and that does sound a lot like something that could connect the Joker and Harley Quinn, who becomes increasingly obsessed with the Joker.
In addition to Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz also returns as Arthur’s former neighbour Sophie Dumond in the sequel. Other newcomers besides Lady Gaga include Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Harry Lawtey and Jacob Lofland.
“Joker 2: Folie À Deux” by Todd Phillips will be released in cinemas on 3 October 2024. So just in time for the 2025 Oscar season…
