Fantasy highlight on Disney+: One of the most brilliant series of the year

by Tommy

With the mass of series that currently appear, even real highlights can occasionally get lost. But you shouldn’t miss these 8 episodes of pure fantasy fun on Disney+

The British Hulu series Extraordinary appeared earlier this year: on January 25, 2023, all 8 half-hour episodes arrived at once and have been available to stream on Disney+ ever since*. Nevertheless, the fantasy highlight has not yet made it onto the radar of many series fans. On Moviepilot, just 85 people have rated Extraordinary after ten months. The 7.7 out of 10 points, however, speak volumes about its popularity among those who have seen it.

Extraordinary at Disney+ is a fantasy firework of creativity

Supernatural powers are part of the norm in the fantasy world of Extraordinary: from the age of 18, each person is given a special ability. Only Jen (Máiréad Tyers) is now 25 and shows no predisposition to Extraordinary. Which understandably frustrates her. Luckily, she has her flatmates who go on a journey of discovery with her to hopefully tease a superpower out of Jen.

If you’re tired of all the Marvel superhero series and want to see a refreshingly different spin on supernatural powers, look no further than Extraordinary. That’s because in the funniest superhero series of the year, supernatural talents are rarely helpful additions to one’s life.

Summoning fish or converting all sorts of objects into PDF format, for example, hardly find heroic application in everyday fantasy life. Jen’s best friend Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) summons dead people into her body, which gets her a job in the English bureaucracy as a will witness for a law firm (or has her channel Adolf Hitler at parties). And Jen’s mother can manipulate technology, even though she doesn’t really know anything about technology. Jizzlord (Luke Rollason), on the other hand, knows nothing of his former life after his cat transformation.

Humor and otherness: Extraordinary brings good fantasy feels to Disney+

Imagine Emma Moran’s series Extraordinary as the more offbeat superhero entertainment Misfits or The Boys – only without the violence and as a feelgood series with a Sex Education-style humor. By normalizing useless superpowers, the English fantasy-comedy comes across as delightfully grounded, and despite a crazy world in the background, can fully engage with its characters.

Season 2 of Extraordinary has fortunately already been ordered and is expected to be released in 2024.
