80 million streams: Successful Amazon smash hit faces a huge problem with sequel

Amazon scored a huge success with the Road House remake. Now a sequel is to be made, but in the meantime there has been a row with a producer and even the director

In the Road House remake, Jake Gyllenhaal battles his way through the rowdy Florida bar scene as an empathetic bouncer. It was so well received by Amazon subscribers that a second part is to be produced after 80 million views.

Unfortunately, there have been arguments and disagreements with two important people behind the scenes in the meantime, which could make negotiations spicy

Amazon’s action thriller Road House is getting a sequel – but what about the director?

The Road House drama began last year when producer Joel Silver was fired. As Variety reported, he was shown the door because of verbal outbursts towards two female producers. The producer himself later claimed that it had to do with his opposition to the use of artificial intelligence.

An even more unpleasant conversation could be coming up with director Doug Liman. In January 2024, he published a nasty guest article in the industry magazine Deadline . In it, he revealed that he would boycott the SXSW premiere of Road House because Amazon released the film (after buying MGM) on the Prime Video platform instead of regularly in cinemas.

With cynical words, he wrote in a bitter tone:

Amazon will sell more toasters if it has more subscriber:s; it will have more subscriber:s if it doesn’t have to compete with movie theaters. A computer could come up with this elegant solution just as easily as stopping global warming by killing all humans.

In addition, Amazon is currently engaged in a copyright dispute with author R. Lance Hill, who wrote the Road House original. According to Deadline, he is also accusing the online mail order company of using AI when completing the remake.
