When is Greta Gerwig’s Narnia reboot coming to Netflix?

Netflix secured the rights to the popular fantasy material back in 2018 and therefore planned a major project. It wasn’t until 2023 that the film adaptation got off the ground with the news that Barbie director Greta Gerwig was to be the creative force behind the first two parts, after Coco and Lightyear screenwriter Matthew Aldrich had previously been associated with the project.

While pre-production started in the UK this year, filming is scheduled to begin in New Zealand in July 2025 and is expected to last about seven months. Accordingly, the first part should reach us on Netflix in the course of 2026. However, the streamer has not yet announced an official start date.

According to the latest reports, Greta Gerwig is also trying to get the Narnia films into theaters before they start streaming, or more precisely into IMAX theaters. Thanksgiving, i.e. the end of November 2026, has been suggested as a possible start date. It remains to be seen whether Netflix will accept this proposal.

What is the Narnia reboot on Netflix about?

It is not yet known which of the seven Narnia novels by C.S. Lewis the Netflix adaptation will take on. It was previously assumed that the remakes would follow in the footsteps of the well-known Disney film adaptations from 2005 to 2010, which started with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Lewis published the book in 1950 as the first part of his series of novels, which was followed in 1955 by the prequel The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

According to the latest reports, Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film adaptation will actually cover that prequel. Actor Jason Isaacs, who was cast as the voice of Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005, recently made a suspicious comment to that effect.

Which Narnia films have been made so far?

C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series has been made into four TV and cinema films. Here is an overview:

Ten-part ITV mini-series:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1967)
95-minute animated film:
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1979)
Three BBC mini-series, each with six episodes:
The King of Narnia (1988)
Prince Caspian (1989)
The Silver Chair (1990)
Disney’s theatrical trilogy:
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
The Chronicles of Narnia 3: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)

Who is in the cast and crew of the Narnia reboot on Netflix?

Recently, rumors circulated that Enola Holmes star Louis Partridge and Saoirse Ronan, who has appeared in front of the camera for Gerwig several times, had been signed for the fantasy epic. However, Ronan stated in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel (via Screen Rant ) that no talks had yet taken place between her and Gerwig. Partridge’s involvement, on the other hand, has already been denied by Netflix itself. Official reports on the cast and crew of the Narnia reboot are not yet known.

Are there any first pictures and a trailer for the Narnia reboot?

Since filming is still in progress, there is no official material of the Narnia remake to see yet. However, first set pictures could be released during the next months of filming. A trailer is not expected until filming is complete, so it will probably not be released before mid-2025.
