One of the most successful German Netflix series is getting season 3 – but there is sad news

Just recently, one of the most successful German Netflix series triumphed through the charts again. Now season 3 has been confirmed. But it will be the last.
The farewell from Austria is bittersweet. Because the Netflix hit The Empress has good and bad news for its countless fans: Season 3 of the acclaimed historical series has been given the green light. However, there will be no fourth season.

Netflix is giving The Empress the grand finale

As a press release indicates, The Empress is to receive a third and final season. Details on content or start date are not yet available. The considerations that led to the end of the series are not mentioned either.

Watch the trailer for The Empress Season 2 here:

The Empress only conquered the Netflix charts again last December with season 2. When the first episodes of the historical drama appeared in 2022, it became the most successful non-English Netflix series for some time and one of the streaming service’s most successful original series ever. In 2023, The Empress won the Emmy for best drama series.

The Empress traces the life of Austrian ruler Sisi. In the first two seasons, she not only has to juggle life at court and her marriage to her husband Franz (Philip Froissant), but her domineering mother-in-law Sophie (Melika Foroutan) and the political enemies of the Danube Monarchy also make life difficult for her.

When is The Empress season 3 coming to Netflix?

It is not yet known when Netflix will release the third season of The Empress. There were about two years between seasons 1 and 2 of the series, so we expect the final third season to be released in winter 2026 at the latest. A 2025 release date is unlikely, not least because of the special scenic effort of the historical film. If you don’t want to wait, you can currently stream 12 other Sissi adaptations.
