After “Matrix 4: Resurrections”, many fans of the iconic original would probably prefer to hear nothing more about the sci-fi franchise. Danny Boyle, however, is now directing a remake – and it won’t be a feature film or a series!
For the majority of “Matrix” fans, there is only the iconic original from 1999. All the sequels, “Reloaded”, “Revolutions” and most recently “Resurrections”, triggered feelings of anger rather than happiness among fans of the first film. But that doesn’t change the fact that we are now facing a new edition of “Matrix”. Although it will neither be a feature film nor a series.
Master director Danny Boyle (“Trainspotting”, “28 Days Later”) will direct a dance adaptation of “The Matrix”, which will be called “Free Your Mind”. Yes, you heard me right: a dance adaptation. It’s a Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures licensed project that will premiere at Factory International, a new performance arts venue in Manchester, on 13 October 2023.
A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
The project is described as follows: “This sensational production will span and respond to the ultra-flexible spaces of the building, harnessing the collective energy of the moment. Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest in immersive design, ‘Free Your Mind’ will take audiences on a thrilling journey through the matrix and into a new realm of possibility.”
At first glance, it seems a rather extraordinary move for Danny Boyle, who accepted an Oscar for Best Director for his drama “Slumdog Millionaire”. In truth, however, Boyle has dabbled in many different areas over the years. In addition to directing the gigantic opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, the director has also staged a whole range of music and dance numbers as well as feature films in a variety of genres.
The music of “Free Your Mind” is composed by Michael “Mikey J” Asante, while Kenrick “H20” Sandy does the choreography. Boyle’s long-time companion Tracey Seaward serves as producer.
