Netflix wants to undercut password sharing. Now subscribers online are mocking an older message in which the streamer struck a very different tone.
Sharing passwords on a shared account causes Netflix to lose a lot of subscriptions, which is why the streamer has recently started taking strict measures to crack down on the practice. Many users are now making fun of a tweet online in which the streaming service itself still described the process as an act of love.

“Love is when you share a password,” reads the Twitter message from 10 March 2017. It’s not hard to see the contrast there with the current banning efforts. And the gloating from subscribers is not long in coming.

“Ridiculous”, for example, can be read there, “this hasn’t aged well”, writes another fan. A third calls the Netflix executives “liars”. And some simply think they have misheard.

In the age of the internet, nothing really gets under the carpet anymore. Whereas companies used to be able to maintain integrity thanks to the obliviousness of their customers, now a glance at the feed is enough to unmask any discrepancies. But who knows? Maybe in five years we’ll all be laughing about the time Netflix bizarrely tried to ban password sharing.
