Before Superman, Henry Cavill was in talks for another superhero role. That one eventually went to Ryan Reynolds. And ended in disaster.
Henry Cavill has often been the right man at the wrong time in his career. First he was too young for his beloved James Bond role, then too old. And even before his big Superman breakthrough in Man of Steel, fellow actor Ryan Reynolds snatched a popular DC role away from him. Fortunately, one might say. It was Green Lantern.
Ryan Reynolds took Henry Cavill away from DC role – and got a movie disaster
According to reliable media site The Hollywood Reporter studio Warner was eyeing Cavill for the superhero role, but also Bradley Cooper or even Justin Timberlake, among others. In the end, the green costume of the universe policeman went to Reynolds.
He must have been very excited at first to finally get his foot in the door of the billion-dollar superhero movie business. The film was slammed by critics (via Metacritic ) and turned into a colossal financial flop (via Box Office Mojo ).
Ryan Reynolds regularly makes fun of Green Lantern
Cavill was probably glad to have escaped disaster in time. Reynolds, on the other hand, couldn’t help but jump on the mocking bandwagon and make fun of himself, the role and the film. This has been happening at regular intervals for a good 12 years now. It is not known whether Cavill ever mourned the role.
