The Walking Dead fans had to wait a long time. Now the series spin-off Tales of the Walking Dead has finally started in Germany. It is an exciting experiment for the zombie franchise.
Anthology spin-offs to popular series and franchises are all the rage right now. American Horror Story, Star Wars, the MCU and even The Boys have spawned spin-offs in recent years, expanding their respective narrative worlds with standalone (mini-)stories. And now it’s the turn of horror series The Walking Dead.
Tales of the Walking Dead adds an anthology series to the zombie franchise. After Fear the Walking Dead and World Beyond, this is now the third spin-off. In the USA, the new The Walking Dead series already started last summer. After a long wait, it finally launched in Germany on 19 February 2023 on MagentaTV.
Tales of the Walking Dead is the most unusual The Walking Dead series yet
Since 19 February, all six episodes of Tales of the Walking Dead have been available to stream on MagentaTV. This is probably the most daring experiment in The Walking Dead series universe. As an anthology, each episode tells an independent story at different points in time of the zombie apocalypse. And it features (mostly) previously unknown characters.

Some fans must think that after 12 years and three series, The Walking Dead can hardly tell anything new. Tales of the Walking Dead counters this with unusual genres and narrative styles, offering refreshingly new perspectives on the all too familiar zombie apocalypse.
For example, one time-loop episode tries its hand at being a quirky comedy, while another takes you to a possibly haunted house. The core of The Walking Dead is maintained, however. Here, too, the focus is on human fates and character stories.
The star-studded cast includes Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Jessie T. Usher (The Boys), Daniella Pineda (Cowboy Bebop), Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick) as well as Parker Posey and Olivia Munn. They all play completely new characters.
In addition, two familiar The Walking Dead characters also return for an episode. Samantha Morton is back as Alpha – before she and her daughter Lydia became Whisperers.

Although The Walking Dead itself ended last November after 11 seasons and 177 episodes, the zombie franchise itself is far from over. This May, the 8th (but also last) season of Fear the Walking Dead will start, before three new spin-offs will usher in a new era for The Walking Dead.
