Dwayne Johnson wanted to rearrange the hierarchy of the DC universe. After the flop of Black Adam, he now returns to Disney to remake one of his biggest hits
Last year, Dwayne Johnson suffered one of the biggest defeats of his career. The superhero film Black Adam was supposed to be the starting signal for a new era in the DC universe. In the meantime, however, it has become clear that this era is over before it has begun. The film failed to meet financial expectations.
To re-establish his status as a blockbuster star, Johnson returns to one of his biggest hits from the past decade: Vaiana. He voices the demigod Maui in the Disney animated film. As The Hollywood Reporter reports, a live-action adaptation of the material is now in the works – starring Johnson.
After DC defeat: Dwayne Johnson and Disney announce live-action adaptation of Vaiana
Disney has remade many of its big animated films in the form of live-action adaptations in recent years, from Alice in Wonderland to Beauty and the Beast. In the case of Vaiana, the original title of which is Moana, the announcement is nevertheless surprising. After all, the original is just seven years old.
Here you can watch the announcement video for the Vaiana remake:
The decision is causing a stir for another reason: actually, a classic animated sequel to Vaiana lends itself to this, similar to what we experienced with The Ice Queen and Ice Queen 2. Not to mention that Disney has announced a Vaiana series in 2020 that should expand the story.
Vaiana remake: when will the live-action version of the Disney film starring Dwayne Johnson open in cinemas?
Based on recent developments, however, the remake of the original film seems to be Disney and Johnson’s top priority. There is no word yet on when the Vaiana remake will be released. As Johnson reveals in the announcement video above, the project is still in a very early stage.
