Surprise: A new The Big Bang Theory spin-off is officially in the works. What is it about and will ProSieben also snatch up this TBBT spin-off?
Four years ago, the last episode of the long-running sitcom The Big Bang Theory aired. Since then, the prequel series Young Sheldon has been filling fans’ hearts and ProSieben’s broadcast slots. The German The Big Bang Theory channel also offers reruns of the series. A lot of reruns. Now there are more on the way. As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, among others, another TBBT spin-off is in the works.
What’s known about the new The Big Bang Theory series
Information on plot and characters is scarce so far. The well-informed industry paper Variety writes that the series is to be set at a time that allows for guest appearances by veteran stars such as Kaley Cuoco (Penny) – so it is to be set in the present. This would set it apart from Young Sheldon, which is set in the 1980s. In addition, the episodes of the new TBBT series are to be one hour long and not 20 minutes as in the successful sitcom. This would result in a completely different tone. However, The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre will also be in charge of this series.
When is the new The Big Bang Theory series coming and will it be on ProSieben?
A start for the TBBT spin-off has not yet been announced. The series was announced as part of the retread of Warner’s streaming service HBO Max, which is now just called Max. In the USA, the series will run accordingly on Max. However, there is no German equivalent for Max. Warner series like Game of Thrones are often licensed to Sky/WOW in Germany. However, there is no fixed rule.
The German The Big Bang Theory platform is traditionally the channel ProSieben. Here, reruns of the main series as well as new seasons of Young Sheldon continue to run. It is therefore very likely that ProSieben will also snatch up the new TBBT spin-off.
