There’s a slightly different superhero movie on TV tonight. It’s bloodier than the entire MCU, funnier than Deadpool, and captivating with Jim Carrey’s meanest role.
Before Deadpool came along, there was Kick-Ass. The mixture of superhero costumes, brutal violence and dirty humor worked so well that in 2013 the sequel Kick-Ass 2 hit theaters. And it starred Jim Carrey as a maniacal vigilante in uniform. Today, the FSK 18 thriller is on TV.
On TV: Kick-Ass 2 teaches Deadpool the fear with Jim Carrey
Part 2 picks up a short time after its predecessor. Costumed vigilante Dave (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has gathered a small group of like-minded people around him and takes on the amateur supervillains of Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). His team also includes former mob henchman Sal Bertolinni aka Captain Stars and Stripes (Carrey). Only Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) is strictly banned from the force by her new family. At least for the time being.
Like its predecessor, Kick-Ass 2 is not stingy with quirky characters. Carrey, in particular, is convincing as a baseball bat-wielding Captain America knockoff without superpowers. In the eyes of many fans, the Deadpool films can take a leaf out of the series’ playfulness. Part 3 of the anti-Marvel carnage has been planned for quite some time.
