An entire DC era is about to come to an end, because the TV channel The CW is radically turning over its series program. Here’s the overview with all canceled and renewed series.
Over the past two decades, The CW has become the most popular youth channel. It brought us the Arrowverse, teen hits like Riverdale and One Tree Hill, and plenty of genre fare with Supernatural and the Vampire Diaries universe. That era has now come to an end.
The CW is one of the five major U.S. networks that annually unveil their new series lineup for the upcoming season in May. We have compiled an overview of the canceled and renewed The CW series for the 2023/2024 TV season for you here.
No Arrowverse, no Riverdale: all series renewed by The CW
Last year it was already apparent that The CW was massively reducing its programming (more on the reasons can be found further down in the article). However, the fact that only two in-house productions survive the restructuring of the station is still surprising.
Both the youth series All American and the series reboot of the classic Walker, Texas Ranger, led by Supernatural star Jared Padalecki, were renewed. However, his colleague Jensen Ackles’ new Supernatural series was less fortunate.

The CW is canceling nearly all of its series: The end of the once most popular youth channel declared
Why The CW is axing so many series is easy to explain: In October 2022, much of the channel was acquired by Nexstar Media Group. This was followed by numerous layoffs and a change in management. To make the station profitable in the long term, The CW’s programming will henceforth undergo a radical realignment.
The station’s programming will no longer be tailored to a youth target group, but mainly to an adult audience. The whole thing is linked to strong cost savings. This means that there will be fewer expensive self-produced series, and more licensed series (from Canada, for example) and reality shows.
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, series will not exceed 13 episodes in the future. The austerity course thus runs through all levels of the program. Fortunately, some long-lived series (The Flash, Nancy Drew and Riverdale) were prepared for their end in time, so as not to be surprised by the sudden cancellation.
