In the upcoming comedy No Hard Feelings, Jennifer Lawrence is set to deflower a 19-year-old in the lead role. Watch the new trailer for the film, which has been the subject of controversy

With films like the Netflix success Don’t Look Up and the Apple TV+ drama Causeway, Jennifer Lawrence has returned after an acting hiatus. This year, No Hard Feelings, a raucous comedy starring her that recalls unbridled high school and teen movies from the late 90s and early 00s, hits theatres.

Now a new trailer has been released for the comedy, which is sparking discussion even before its release due to the storyline.

Age difference in new Jennifer Lawrence comedy triggers criticism

No Hard Feelings revolves around Maddie (Lawrence), who makes ends meet as an Uber driver. When her car is impounded, she faces major money problems. She then discovers an ad in which wealthy parents are looking for a date for their shy 19-year-old son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman). To put it bluntly, they want him to lose his virginity before he goes off to college. Maddie accepts the offer, as a new car awaits her as a reward.

The fact that the story of No Hard Feelings takes place between a 30-something woman and a 19-year-old has already caused critical reactions. According to Screen Rant many have commented on the first trailer for the comedy by saying that the age difference between the main characters would evoke uncomfortable grooming associations.

What does “grooming” mean? Grooming refers to the deliberate contact of minors by adults with the intention of abuse. In the trailers, however, it should be clearly shown that Percy finds Maddie’s advances uncomfortable and resists them. It is also not yet clear how exactly the film will address the issue.
