True crime is booming. You could be forgiven for thinking that the makers of the top-starring Netflix thriller “The Good Nurse” spontaneously wanted to jump on this bandwagon. Yet the film has been in the making for what feels like ages. Here you can see the trailer:
We first reported on “The Good Nurse” almost eight years ago. At the time, “Black Swan” and “Requiem For A Dream” maestro Darren Aronofsky was slated to direct the true-crime drama. But then it became very quiet about the project for a long time. It was only four years later that we heard something again – this time much more concrete news.
With Dane Tobias Lindholm, the mastermind behind the strong “A War”, not only a new director was announced at that time. With Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Oscar-nominated for “1917”), a screenwriter was also on board and the stars of the film were also already introduced: Eddie Redmayne from the “Fantastic Beasts” series dreamed up by “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling as well as Jessica Chastain (“Interstellar”, “ES Chapter 2”).
Nevertheless, once again nothing worth mentioning happened. Only in spring 2020 did it become known that Netflix had secured the rights for the film, which had not yet been shot, for an alleged 25 million dollars. Apparently, despite the star cast, this financial injection was urgently needed so that Lindholm could finally get started in April 2021 with the help of chief cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes (“Manchester By The Sea”). Kim Dickens (“Gone Girl”), Noah Emmerich (“The Truman Show”) and ex-football pro Nnamdi Asomugha (“Harriet”) stood in front of the camera in other parts. The project with a top-class cast is thus now no longer coming to the cinema as originally planned, but to streaming service Netflix – and very soon.
The project has now been completed. On 11 September 2022, the film celebrated its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). On 26 October 2022, “The Good Nurse” will be released worldwide and exclusively on the Netflix streaming service.
If you want to pass the time until the streaming start by reading the non-fiction book “The Good Nurse: A True Story Of Medicine, Madness, And Murder” by Charles Graeber, you can find it at online retailers like Amazon. The volume is available in print and as a Kindle version – but only in the original English-language version:
THIS IS THE STORY OF “THE GOOD NURSE “
Dedicated nurse and single mother Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) struggles with a life-threatening heart condition. As a result, she repeatedly reaches her physical and emotional limits during the tough and demanding night shifts in her hospital’s intensive care unit.
Her bosses finally hire Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), a seemingly very competent, attentive and empathetic nurse, to relieve her. As they spend the long nights together in the hospital, a warm friendship develops between them.
The Good Nurse might be Netflix’s best film to date. A completely riveting film with magnificent performances by Eddie Redmayne & Jessica Chastain. Redmayne’s performance is unlike anything you’ve ever seen him do before. Truly chilling & haunting. TheGoodNurse TIFF22 pic.twitter.com/cwyhledDEW

Amy trusts her colleague completely and has no problem with him helping her look after her young children every now and then. But then a series of mysterious deaths of patients at the hospital triggers a police investigation that points to Charlie as the prime suspect. Should she have been so wrong about him?
