Amazon Prime has been joined by a new fantasy adaptation whose original is two centuries old, but whose remake presents us with a modern adventure with a Harry Potter vibe.

In 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed his famous opera The Magic Flute for the first time – now the German fantasy film makes the legendary story accessible to a new generation 232 years later.

In The Magic Flute, young Brit Tim Walker (Netflix fantasy star Jack Wolfe from season 2’s Shadow and Bone) arrives at the famous Austrian Mozart boarding school to become a singer. But instead of just taking music lessons and fending off mean classmates, he also stumbles through a magical portal that transports him into the world of the Magic Flute.
Now the teenager has to prove himself in the fantasy role of Prince Tamino, master difficult tasks and meet world-famous characters such as the Queen of the Night or his sidekick Papageno (Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon).

The trailer for the fantasy film already suggested Harry Potter comparisons with its magical boarding school, giant snakes and secret doors. Embedded in a present-day narrative, The Magic Flute nevertheless adheres to Mozart’s music during its portal journeys into the world of the Magic Flute and performs well-known pieces of the opera as musical numbers.
The Magic Flute was produced by German director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day), among others. In supporting roles in the German fantasy production, which was filmed with English-speaking stars, you can also discover the faces of Wilson Gonzalez Ochsenknecht, Tedros Teclebrhan and Waldemar Kobus, all of whom are well-known in this country. Amadeus fans will also enjoy the appearance of F. Murray Abraham as Mozart’s boarding school director in the cast.
