For many, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is considered the best version of Batman. Then in 2022, The Batman hit theaters, featuring Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne. The performance of the Twilight star and the unusual style of director Matt Reeves, even with XXL running time of three hours, ensure that we got an absolute superhero masterpiece. You can stream The Batman now for the first time with Amazon Prime subscription at no extra cost.
The Batman turns superhero story into dark noir thriller
The story features Bruce Wayne in his 30s, when he’s not yet perfectly fused with his superhero persona. In The Batman, he investigates a series of murders in which the Riddler (Paul Dano) leaves riddles for Batman himself at the crime scenes. Other familiar comic book characters like Selena Kyle (Zoë Kravitz) aka Catwoman and the Penguin (Colin Farrell) appear as important supporting characters in the story.
Besides the focus on a younger Batman we’ve never seen before in a live-action film, Reeves’ film is most impressive for its staging as a dark noir thriller. The director was inspired by David Fincher masterpieces like Seven and Zodiac, which is also reflected in The Batman’s brilliant visual design.
Robert Pattinson plays the best Bruce Wayne ever in The Batman
Besides the fantastic production and the brilliant atmosphere that Gotham City as a setting conjures up like a character of its own, the DC movie is mainly carried by Robert Pattinson’s acting performance.
With his jawline and sinister, rolling voice, he not only embodies the Dark Knight ideally. Pattinson gives his younger Bruce Wayne, in particular, a depressed, haggard aura. His billionaire scion with a tragic childhood is a fascinating contrast to Pattinson’s Batman presence, where he acts similarly psychotic and frightening as, say, Ben Affleck in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman.
Pattinson’s performance and Matt Reeves’ intense style make The Batman a superhero masterpiece that never bores for a second, even at three hours long.
