A masterpiece starring Nicolas Cage is available on Netflix starting today. There the star plays his best role in more than two decades. And is looking for a pig.
Nicolas Cage is a mystery to many. How can the same star who won an Oscar in 1995 with Leaving Las Vegas – Love to Death star in disastrous flops like Grand Isle? But every few films there’s an absolute gem, a masterpiece in which he shows that he can shake Oscar potential out of his pocket at any time. The latest example is Pig, which is now available to stream on Netflix.
On Netflix: Nicolas Cage on a pig hunt captivates in just 5 minutes
Pig revolves around ex-star chef Rob (Cage), who lives deep in the woods with his truffle pig. When his animal friend is stolen from him, he returns to the big city of Portland after years to follow the trail of the kidnappers. In the process, he once again encounters a milieu that once celebrated him as a culinary visionary.
Pig has many great script ideas, including a fight club for chefs in Portland’s underworld. But even more impressive is the space director Michael Sarnoski gives his leading man, allowing Cage to unleash his best drama qualities.
In one scene, for example, he visits the successful star restaurant of a former student. Dirty and unkempt, he rejects all pity and attacks his host for his existential sellout. The scene lasts only a few minutes and will delight any Cage fan.
