Whether you want to take a subscription break but still dive into a galaxy far, far away with a bounty hunter and his green companion, or you want to add to your “Star Wars” collection, there’s good home theatre news!
If you haven’t had a moment today that made you groan “Dude, how time flies!”, then the time has come: In November, Disney+ will be four years old – and therefore also the hit series “The Mandalorian” that started with it! And “Star Wars” fans have been wondering for almost as long whether they will ever be able to put the format on their shelves with their favourite films. This anxiety has finally come to an end.
Because Disney is gradually moving away from its “streaming has absolute priority!” policy and is paying more attention to the physical media business again. The consequence of this: On 15 December 2023, the first season of “The Mandalorian” will be released as a limited 4K edition in a steelbook for home cinema!
The Steelbook includes two 4K discs and two Blu-ray discs, featuring all eight episodes of the first season plus bonus material. In various other markets, including the US and the UK, the second season of The Mandalorian will also receive a physical release. As soon as season two is announced for the local home cinema market, we will of course keep you informed.
“THE MANDALORIAN”: A DISNEY+ PILLAR OF SUPPORT
Although it would still be months before the German launch of Disney+, we could already hear on 12 November 2019 what a direct hit Disney and Lucasfilm had landed with “The Mandalorian”: Almost immediately after the US launch, social networks were filled to the brim with pictures of “Baby Yoda”. A spoiler-free wait until the German release was like a Herculean task!
It is now a similar Herculean task to get people to call the green chap by his later revealed, correct name – Grogu. But no matter how you talk about the character who travels the galaxy alongside the bounty hunter Din Djarin played by Pedro Pascal: It must be acknowledged without envy that “The Mandalorian” is one of Disney+’s flagship films.

Season one was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Best Drama Series, among other awards, and won seven Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. On top of that, the theme music composed by Ludwig Göransson is one of the current series nerd earworms par excellence. And – “Star Trek” fans must now be very strong! – the FILMSTARTS community even voted “The Mandalorian” the best sci-fi series in history.
But where does the hit production inspired by western series of past TV eras actually belong when you attempt a complete “Star Wars” chronicle? Well, you can put your own grey matter to the torch, or you can simply take a look at our overview. Then you’ll also save a lot of time, which you can invest in a “The Mandalorian” rewatch instead.
