Film plot and background
Documentary film that tells the story of climate change in impressive images of the Greenland ice landscape and accompanies three internationally renowned scientists in their research.
In every glaciologist there is also an adventurer. True to this motto, three researchers have committed themselves to learning about the movements of the ice and the glaciers there, not only from afar, but directly on location in Greenland. Together with director and cameraman Lars Henrik Ostenfeld, glaciologist and professor Alun Hubbard ventures into the most extreme landscapes on earth.
During an unprecedented descent into a 180-metre-deep ice cave, the team aims to reach the core of the ice. From the samples taken, the researchers Dorte Dahl-Jensen and Jason Box can make predictions about all of our lives and precise statements about the past 100,000 years ago.
How much is the ice melting in Greenland? How fast could sea levels rise? And is there any hope of stopping this process? The research in Greenland can be used to make predictions for the entire globe. The reason: the ice-covered island is considered a global thermometer.
“Into the Ice” – background, cinema release
As narrator, “Toten Hosen” front singer Campino leads us through the moving nature documentary “Into the Ice”. It is a cry for help to stand up for climate protection now.
As impressive and unique as the view from the ice cave is, the work on site is all the more dangerous. Not only extreme temperatures, but also the fear that the equipment will not be sufficient makes the work more difficult for the researchers. The ice sheet in Greenland is up to 3.2 kilometres thick at its thickest point. If it were to melt completely, the sea level would rise by 7 metres – places like the Philippines, the Maldives and cities like Amsterdam, Venice, New York or Miami would be at risk of being submerged in the floods.
Into the Ice” will be released in cinemas on 15 September 2022. In parallel, the documentary can also be enjoyed by many schoolchildren in special screenings.
