“X” by Ti West is one of the best horror films of the year. The prequel “Pearl” has also already brought in a lot of festival praise. And Martin Scorsese was even deeply disturbed by the film – so much so that he could hardly fall asleep afterwards!
Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest American directors of all time. Since the 1970s, he has made film history time and again and delivered a host of great films, including “Taxi Driver”, “Like a Wild Bull”, “GoodFellas”, “Shutter Island”, “Departed” and “The Irishman”. In addition, Scorsese is considered an absolute hardcore cineaste who watches virtually everything and knows everything. You’d think that by now nothing could shock the man. But no way. Martin Scorsese has now announced that the horror film “Pearl” was responsible for the fact that he almost didn’t get a wink of sleep.
“Pearl” is the prequel to Ti West’s “X”, which opened in German cinemas in 2022 and is one of the best horror films of the year for us, as you can see from the official review. “Pearl”, which was once again directed by Ti West, is also a real board, as we were already able to discover at the Venice Film Festival. INSPIRING, DISTURBING, UNSETTLING!
In Martin Scorsese’s “Pearl” review, which was published via /Film, the master director has now revealed how impressive the viewing experience of the film was for him. The review says: “Ti West’s films have an energy that is so rare these days, driven by a pure, unadulterated love of cinema. You can feel it in every frame. […] ‘Pearl’ makes for a wild, mesmerising, deeply – and I mean deeply – disturbing 102 minutes. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth really know how to play with the audience…. Before they plunge the knife into our chests and start twisting it.”
Scorsese added: “I was thrilled, then disturbed, then so unsettled that I had a hard time falling asleep after the film. But I couldn’t stop watching.”
After Ti West secretly filmed the prequel “Pearl” after “X”, which is set in 1918 and features a young woman (Mia Goth) desperate to become famous and make it from her parents’ drab farm to Hollywood, a third instalment has now already been confirmed.
This one will be called “MaXXXine” and will be set in 1985 – a few years after the events in “X”. In it, Mia Goth once again takes on the role of Maxime and is the only one who survived that porn shoot in “X” that got out of hand. But that hasn’t stopped her from her dream of becoming famous.
How it is that Mia Goth is involved in the prequel “Pearl”, set in 1918, but also in the 1980s horror films “X” and “MaXXXine”, is not to be revealed at this point. It is said that “MaXXXine” has not yet been shot, but filming is to begin very soon so that the film can be released in 2023.
