New on Amazon Prime Video: A dark serial killer chase full of twists

by Dennis

“Mindhunters” is dark thriller cinema for in between and is now available in the Amazon Prime Video subscription. Even if the star-studded thriller isn’t a masterpiece, you can definitely have fun here.

Of course, genre lovers are more than familiar with the name Renny Harlin. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Finnish filmmaker made his mark on action and horror cinema with Nightmare On Elm Street 4, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Deadly Christmas and Deep Blue Sea. In the meantime, Harlin is still making films, but unfortunately they only come out as cucumbers like “Devil’s Pass”, “The Legend Of Hercules” and “Skiptrace”.

The thriller “Mindhunters”, directed by Renny Harlin, was whimsical one last time, and is now available for download at no extra charge as part of the Amazon Prime Video subscription. The serial killer hunt with Christian Slater, Jonny Lee Miller and Val Kilmer from 2004 is not an all-round successful film, but as a slightly trashy thriller the bloody guesswork certainly provides fun entertainment.

THIS IS WHAT “MINDHUNTERS” IS ABOUT

At the end of their training, eight FBI agents have to solve simulated murder cases. The scene of the big final exam is a secluded island of the US military. But when the group consisting of Lucas Harper (Jonny Lee Miller), Nicole Willis (Patricia (Velasquez), Bobby Whitman (Eion Bailey), Vince Sherman (Clifton Collins Jr.) and Rafe Perry (Will Kemp) comes across the first crime scene, everything gets out of hand because a real killer is on the loose.

The FBI trainees want to stop the test and call for help, but communication with the mainland is impossible – and the only boat at the harbour explodes before the eyes of the more than stunned group. An eerie game of cat and mouse begins…

NOT CLEVER, BUT ENTERTAINING

In the official FILMSTARTS review, “Mindhunters” received an average of 2.5 out of 5 possible stars. Our author Jürgen Armbruster writes in his conclusion: “Viewed soberly, ‘Mindhunters’ […] is a film with many strengths, but also at least as many weaknesses. Some may be thrilled by the gripping chamber drama, others may tear their hair out because of the shortcomings. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Mindhunters’ is a passable film that could have been better, but doesn’t completely disappoint. “
