Director Edward Berger celebrated the biggest triumph of his career so far at the Oscars 2023. The Netflix film he directed, In the West Nothing New, went home with four trophies. Best Cinematography, Best Music and Best Production Design: the most important might be the gold for Best International Film.
How does the German Oscar winner’s career continue after this success? As Deadline reports, Berger has already landed his next project. It’s the Amazon series Hellhole, an eight-part crime-thriller drama based on the novel of the same name by Casey Sherman.

Mohamad el Masri, who is part of the writing team of the Apple series Severance, serves as showrunner and executive producer. In addition, Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. is involved with his production company Team Downey. Oscar Isaac, also known from the Marvel universe, is in talks for the lead role.

Hellhole tells the story of US author Kurt Vonnegut, who is best known for his satirical sci-fi novels. The plot begins in 1969 and tells of a man who has not yet found his place in life. As a car salesman, Kurt tries to keep himself and his family afloat.
When the bodies of two missing women turn up one day, he is drawn into the case. He obsessively follows the reports of the crime and does everything he can to track down the serial killer responsible for it. In the process, he builds up a dangerous relationship with the main suspect.
Berger knows his way around big series. Before Nothing New in the West, he shot individual episodes of The Terror and Your Honor in the USA. He is also the director behind the miniseries Patrick Melrose with Benedict Cumberbatch. He was also significantly involved in the creation of the RTL series Deutschland 83.
